fix(text-injection): end option parsing before typed text (#922)
* fix(text-injection): end option parsing before typed text A 20-char xdotool chunk, or a 200-char wtype/ydotool chunk, that starts with '-' (a word hyphenated across the chunk boundary) is parsed as a flag: 'xdotool type --clearmodifiers -stickation' exits 1 with 'type: unrecognized option' and the rest of the dictation is dropped. Pass '--' before the text argument in the xdotool, wtype, and ydotool type invocations so the remaining argument is always typed literally. Fixes #921 * test(portal-fallback): expect the wtype option terminator The partial-type fallback assertion predates the -- terminator and still expected the bare ['wtype', 'llo'] argv. fix(text-injection): detect KWin 6 VirtualKeyboard property (#919)
* fix(text-injection): detect KWin 6 VirtualKeyboard property On KDE Plasma 6 the org.kde.kwin.VirtualKeyboard 'enabled' property no longer exists; the setting is reported as 'available'. Query 'available' first, keep 'enabled' as the Plasma 5 fallback, and accept both the real (<true>,) gdbus output and the doubly wrapped (<<true>>,) form. With the bridge check working, KDE sessions with Virtual Keyboard set to "IBus Wayland" can safely use scoped IBus injection again: the leftover-daemon trap of #752 is exactly what a confirmed VK bridge disambiguates. KDE without a confirmed VK stays excluded. KWin's RemoteDesktop portal scrambles letter case, so in auto mode on KDE sessions an installed ydotool is preferred over the portal -- the ordering used before the portal backend existed. Fixes #911 * fix(text-injection): keep KDE portal fallback ahead of daemonless ydotool On KDE, when ydotool is installed but cannot run (no daemon, no /dev/uinput access) and wtype is absent, the daemonless-ydotool branch fired before the portal fallback -- selecting a backend that fails at injection time while a working portal sat unused. The portal fallback now precedes the daemonless branch; working ydotool still outranks the portal on KDE. --------- Co-authored-by: Jatin K Malik <jatinkrmalik@gmail.com> |

feat(post-processing): pipe transcriptions through an optional postprocessing script (#479)
* feat(post-processing): pipe transcriptions through user-defined script Add a configurable post-processing step that passes each transcription result to an external executable via stdin and uses its stdout as the text to type. Enables custom transforms (formatting, LLM rewriting, etc.) without modifying Vocalinux. Falls back to original text on script failure or timeout. * test(post-processor): add unit tests and extract apply_post_processing Move config-reading logic from main.py closure into apply_post_processing() in post_processor.py so it can be tested independently. Add 11 unit tests covering PostProcessor.process() and apply_post_processing(). * docs(post-processing): document post-processing script feature * fix formatting of one file * fix(post-processing): run the user script with a stripped host environment Rebase compat: the host_process AST guard requires every subprocess spawned for a host binary to pass env=host_env() so an AppImage's LD_LIBRARY_PATH/GI_TYPELIB_PATH/PYTHONHOME do not leak in. Also give apply_post_processing() a typed ConfigManager parameter and keep text_callback_wrapper's local variable typed as str for mypy. * fix(post-processing): preserve paragraph breaks and tighten script handling Take script stdout verbatim instead of rstripping every trailing newline, so the "new paragraph" voice command's break survives a passthrough script. A single trailing newline is still dropped, but only when the transcription had none — it is almost always just the line terminator echo/print-style tools append. Also stop writing transformed output to the log (it can carry sensitive dictation into retained logs), catch only the expected process/OS/encoding failures instead of every Exception, and add the missing signature annotations. * fix(main): run the post-processing script off the recognition thread A user script may take seconds per segment, and text callbacks run on the recognition thread that drains the bounded audio-segment queue; stalling it drops queued dictation once the queue fills. Submit post-processing and injection to a dedicated single-worker executor so the backlog waits instead of losing speech, while keeping injection order. On timeout or failure the worker falls back to the original text, and an unexpected error is logged with a traceback and still injects the original rather than silently dropping the segment. Also pin the callback tests' get_str mock to no-script so they exercise the synchronous path deterministically, and add a callback test proving transformed text (including preserved paragraph breaks) reaches the injector. * docs(post-processing): annotate new callbacks and clarify stdout contract Add the missing type annotations on the new Settings page callbacks per the repository guide, and document that script stdout is used verbatim (a lone trailing newline added by line-oriented tools is dropped only when the transcription had none) and that scripts run on a dedicated worker. * test(main): annotate new post-processing callback tests * fix(main): bind queued dictation to its target app and drain worker on quit Route every transcription segment through the single post-processing worker (a pass-through when no script is configured) so clearing the script path mid-queue can no longer let a later segment overtake an earlier one still running. A segment that can sit in the backlog — a script is configured or a job is still running — is bound to the application focused when it was dictated; the worker drops it if focus has verifiably moved to another application, so delayed dictation cannot land in the wrong app. Wire the worker into the tray quit path via an on_quit hook: it clears the acceptance flag, cancels pending jobs, and waits — bounded by the script's own timeout — so nothing injects after the injector stops. * fix(main): keep voice actions ordered and probe focus off the recognition thread - Queue voice-command actions on the post-processing worker so an action can no longer overtake dictated text still waiting to be injected. - Move the submit-time focus probe onto a dedicated executor; the recognition thread only submits the probe, and the job joins the result at inject time, so compositor tools can no longer stall consumption of the bounded audio-segment queue. - Re-check the quit flag after the inject-time focus re-probe, then shut both workers down without waiting on a running script so quitting does not freeze on the script timeout. * fix(main): capture submit-time focus on dedicated threads and serialize quit - Replace the shared focus-probe executor with a fresh daemon thread per submission so a slow earlier probe cannot delay a later one past the focus change it is meant to capture; jobs read the result off a one-slot queue at inject time. - Give queued voice actions the same submit-time focus binding as text segments so a queued shortcut is dropped instead of fired into a newly focused application. - Hold injection_lock across the accept-check plus inject/action call so quit waits only for an in-flight injection instead of racing it. - Queue the IDLE reset of last_injected_text behind pending worker jobs so a queued 'delete that' still sees the text it targets. * fix(main): keep actions instant on a free worker and bound quit wait - An action now starts a submit-time focus probe only when it actually queues behind other jobs; with a free worker there is no delay window to bind against, so the probe's compositor calls are skipped and the action stays immediate even when a script is configured. - Probe and executor submission now happen inside pending_jobs_lock so queue order matches callback order — a job that saw an empty queue can no longer slip behind one that arrived while it was submitting. - Every inject-path subprocess call (xdotool window/key/type, wtype and ydotool type) is bounded by a timeout, and the quit hook's injection_lock wait is capped, so quitting can no longer freeze on a stalled injector subprocess. * fix(main): bind every action to submit-time focus without slowing it down - Every voice action now starts a submit-time focus probe: submission never guarantees immediate execution, so skipping the binding left a focus-change window in which a shortcut could fire into another app. The worker waits on the probe for at most one second — milliseconds on a healthy desktop — so immediate actions stay immediate while a genuinely stalled probe falls back to the injector's own targeting. - Quit waits for an in-flight injection without a cap again: every inject-path subprocess is individually bounded, so the wait always ends with the injection and a long transcription is never cut off. - The wtype/ydotool typing timeout is now derived from the configured per-key delay (a generous multiple), so a legitimately slow type can never be cut mid-text; a timed-out type no longer falls through to the clipboard fallback, which would duplicate the partial fragment. * fix(main): drop unverified actions and make quit-time injection abortable - An action whose submit-time focus probe cannot answer inside its one-second bound is now dropped instead of running unverified: a stalled probe can no longer leave a shortcut pointing at whatever application happens to be focused. - Quit asks the injector to abort in-flight injections, and injection paths honour it: the xdotool chunk loop stops between chunks, the wtype/ydotool type call runs as a polling Popen that can be killed, and paste/shortcut/backspace entry points exit early. The quit hook still waits for an in-flight injection, but the wait is bounded by at most one already-running subprocess call — never the injection's full length — and no subprocess is ever stopped mid-call by a timeout cap on the wait itself. - Annotate the remaining untyped test helpers. * fix(main): wait out slow focus probes; restore run() in wayland typing - An action no longer races its submit-time focus probe on a one-second bound: the job waits for the probe's own answer, whose compositor calls already carry per-call timeouts and short-circuit absent tools. A slow but living probe delays the command instead of discarding it, so a valid "undo" can no longer be lost to timing alone, and focus verification still decides every drop. - Wayland typing goes back to subprocess.run so tests keep intercepting the same entry point. Abortability is preserved by typing in 200-character chunks with the shutdown check between calls — a whole-string call could not be interrupted, but no single chunk holds the injector for more than its own scaled budget. - The abort flag gains a class-level default so injectors built without __init__ in tests still answer the checks; each real instance gets its own event in __init__. - Update call-shape assertions for the typed-call timeout and finish annotating the test methods touched by the callback refactor. * fix(inject): never retype text a failed chunked call already sent - _PartiallyTyped carries the confirmed-delivered prefix length out of the chunked type loops, so every downstream fallback continues from the untyped remainder: the Wayland-to-xdotool switch types only the tail, and the clipboard fallback copies only the tail, never the whole string a second time. - The xdotool retry loop gains the same accounting — a retry now resumes at the first untyped chunk instead of restarting at the top and duplicating everything the failed attempt already delivered. - Annotate the remaining test signature the repository guide requires. * fix(inject): report partial typing as failure even when clipboard lands A chunked type call that dies mid-text leaves only a prefix on screen, and the remainder-fallback keeps it that way: it copies the tail for a manual paste but now returns False, so the caller no longer records the full transcription as injected and a following "delete that" cannot erase text that was never typed. * fix(inject): keep deletion state aligned with delivered text inject_text now records how many characters a call confirmed on screen as last_typed_count: the whole length on success, the typed prefix after a partial failure, -1 when the delivered amount is unknowable. The transcription caller uses it to keep last_injected_text honest — a following "delete that" erases the typed prefix or nothing, never the previous segment or text that never arrived. * fix(inject): never replay input a timed-out portal job may have delivered - RemoteDesktopPortalError.delivered=None marks an unreported job's count as unknowable; all three portal fallbacks demote and skip instead of replaying, and text injection surfaces as TimeoutExpired so no full-text clipboard copy is offered - _PartiallyTyped counts raised after a portal demote are rebased onto the original text (typed_prefix) so the caller clips the real prefix - evdev: a consumed pure-modifier press is withheld and replayed ahead of the first non-target press, so holding RightAlt for AltGr composition still reaches the application - history: extend_latest gains an expected_latest CAS guard so a late segment from an older worker merges only into its own session's snippet, never into a newer session's entry - quit path aborts in-flight injections before waiting on the lock so quitting cannot freeze behind a long transcription's typing budget - tests: stop _ensure_ydotoold leaking a real Popen in Wayland tests * fix(shortcut): replay withheld modifiers across devices and after SYN_DROPPED - Replay withheld modifier presses from every device, not only the fd the character arrived on: split keyboards deliver AltGr and the character on separate devices, and a per-fd check forwarded a plain character. - Let the post-SYN_DROPPED resync run when only withheld modifiers exist for the fd, so a press whose release the dropped burst ate is pruned instead of replaying a stale modifier on the next ordinary key. * fix(history, pads): keep late segments pad-bound deliveries and pad deletions correct - Track the worker behind the ended session's snippet so late segments from an older worker cannot merge into a newer session's entry - Skip the focus-change drop for dictation-pad segments and pad-bound editing commands, which never target the focused application - Refuse 'delete that' when a manual pad edit blurred the segment boundaries instead of deleting the stale recorded length * style: drop unneeded nonlocal for mutated worker set * fix(shortcut): share one evdev device layer across shortcut listeners Each KeyboardShortcutManager built its own EvdevKeyboardBackend, and on evdev every backend opened and grabbed the same physical keyboards: the first grabber received all events and the rest received none, so per-language shortcuts could never fire on Wayland. All backends now bind to a process-wide EvdevDeviceHub that opens each keyboard once, owns the grabs and the paired uinput clones, and fans every event out to each registered engine. An event is re-emitted to applications only when no engine consumed it, so suppression semantics stay the same while per-engine matching state (combo progress, withheld modifiers, swallowed presses) remains independent. * fix(history): own late segments per worker and decide pad routing once - ended_worker_snippets maps each ended session's worker to its own (snippet, commit epoch): late deliveries merge into their session's entry however many sessions have committed since, so one session's stragglers never split across Recent Snippets entries. - The leftover-segment commit reads the live history epoch inside the session lock: a mid-session clear() no longer makes the stale ended epoch refuse valid post-clear dictation. - The pad-bound routing decision is captured once per job and passed to the injector/action handler, so a toggle flip between the focus check and delivery cannot reroute text or shortcuts into the focused app. - Dead recognition workers are pruned from the tracking set and map so long runs don't accumulate finished threads. - The custom-terms switch now suppresses GTK's own state-set on save failure so it shows the value that actually persisted. * fix(shortcut): serialize evdev device layer teardown against restart The last listener's unregister released the engine lock before joining the monitor thread and closing devices, so a new listener registering in that gap opened keyboards the stale teardown then closed — it stayed active but dead, and briefly grabbed keyboards stopped forwarding input. A lifecycle lock now covers the whole close/open transition in register, unregister, and the monitor's unexpected-exit teardown, so a cold start can only open devices after the previous generation finished closing (also making the new generation's grabs succeed). A generation stamp tells a monitor thread that outlived its join() its incarnation is over even when running has gone True again. * fix(injection): log focus-probe failures and narrow clipboard fallback catch A crashed focus probe turned into an unknown result with no logged error, indistinguishable from unavailable focus information; the partial-typing clipboard fallback caught every exception. Log the probe failure with context and narrow the clipboard catch to the exceptions the fallback path can actually raise. * fix(shortcut): join the evdev monitor outside the lifecycle lock If the monitor exited unexpectedly while the last listener unregistered, its cleanup queued on the lifecycle lock that unregister() held for the join — stalling shutdown for the join's full 2s timeout. The close now finishes inside the lock and the join waits after it is released, so the monitor's own cleanup can run and exit instead of queueing behind it. Closing before the join also dies the monitor's read/select on the closed fds right away. A _closed gate on _open_keyboard_device keeps a rescan from opening a device between detach and close that nothing would ever close. * fix(injection): narrow focus-probe catch to the raisable exception set get_focused_window() reports Optional and never raises; the catch now covers only what can realistically escape the queue write and logs it with context, keeping the waiting job released. * fix(shortcut): tag evdev device fds with the generation that opened them A monitor that outlived join() could still touch a newer generation's devices: the loop re-checked the generation only at the top, so mid-iteration it could dispatch from, forward to, or remove devices a restarted listener had just opened. Every fd is now tagged with the generation that opened it, and the tag is verified at each point a monitor could mutate shared state — fd lookup for dispatch, clone forwarding, forwarder release, device removal, and rescan opens — while dispatch re-checks the generation between events and the per-fd loop breaks on it. Cold starts bump the generation before opening so fresh devices are tagged for the new generation. Devices an older generation opened stay tagged stale, so its reader leaves them alone. --------- Co-authored-by: Jatin K Malik <jatinkrmalik@gmail.com> |

feat(text-injection): let config.json pin the injection backend (#649)
* feat(text-injection): let config.json pin the injection backend (#476) Autodetection has to infer whether IBus commits actually reach the focused application, and it cannot verify that: commit_text() reports success even when the compositor drops the text. When the inference is wrong the failure is silent, and dictation appears to work in XWayland windows while doing nothing in native ones. VOCALINUX_FORCE_BACKEND already provides an escape hatch, but it is an environment variable: it covers a single run, is undocumented outside the test suite, and a user whose compositor is misdetected has to wrap the launcher in a shell script to make the choice stick. Add a persistent `text_injection.backend` setting alongside it, accepting the same ibus/wtype/ydotool/auto values. The environment variable still wins so a backend can be A/B-tested for one run without touching the saved configuration, and the startup log now names which of the two pinned the choice so a stale setting is diagnosable from --debug output. Reads the file directly rather than through ConfigManager, keeping this package independent of the UI layer, exactly as _should_copy_to_clipboard already does. An unreadable or corrupt config falls back to autodetection instead of blocking startup, and an unrecognised value is ignored with a warning so a typo cannot silently pin the wrong backend. Defaults to "auto", so existing installs behave exactly as before. * fix(text-injection): tell an explicit VOCALINUX_FORCE_BACKEND=auto from unset The variable is meant to override the saved text_injection.backend pin for a single run, which is what makes the two paths A/B-testable without editing config. Setting it to auto -- the value that means "autodetect this time" -- did not do that: the reader collapsed unset and an explicit auto into the same "auto" return, so the caller read both as "nothing was forced" and fell through to the saved pin. The pin won, and there was no way to ask for autodetection for one run short of editing the config file the variable exists to avoid. Read the variable as three states instead: unset, an explicit auto, or a backend name. Only the unset state consults config, so an explicit auto now short-circuits to autodetection. An unrecognised value is deliberately treated as unset rather than as auto. A typo means the user failed to override their preference, not that they asked to discard it, so falling through to a valid saved pin is the kinder reading. _forced_backend() keeps its signature and its collapsed return, so its existing callers and tests are untouched; the new three-state reading lives alongside it and is what the preference resolver consumes. * feat(text-injection): accept an xdotool pin and warn when ibus overrides the denylist Two gaps in the pinnable backend set. xdotool was not accepted, even though on X11 it is the tool that actually does the typing. Users were told to pin a *Wayland* backend to mean "not IBus", and get xdotool as a side effect. Naming it directly is what they were reaching for. On Wayland it needs no special handling: the value skips IBus like any other non-ibus pin and falls through to the existing XWayland fallback, so no branch is added to the selection chain. The accepted values now live in one tuple, because four places listed them -- both readers and both "expected ..." messages -- and a fifth value would have had to be added to all four. The two messages derive from the tuple, so they cannot fall behind it. Pinning ibus also silently bypasses the compositor denylist. That check exists because a denylisted compositor makes IBus report a commit as delivered while the text never arrives (#478, #485), so a pin is the one setting that can put a user back into a failure with no symptom other than nothing happening. The pin is still honoured -- an override that ignores you is worse than one that warns -- but it now says so at warning level, names the compositor, and gives the remedy. It stays quiet when the compositor genuinely bridges IBus, including a denylisted one running the ibus-wayland bridge, and on X11 where the denylist does not apply. The check is evaluated once. The guard chain short-circuits on the pin, so a pinned run never reaches the existing compositor branch, and this is its first and only call -- worth knowing because the check can shell out to pgrep or gdbus. A test asserts the call count so that stays true. Documents xdotool in the value table and rewrites the X11 paragraph, which described xdotool as the implicit result of pinning something else rather than as a value you can name. * fix(text-injection): say so when the pinned backend is not the one in use A pin could be quietly ignored. Pinning a tool that is not installed fell through to autodetection and typed with whatever it found, under a log line that had already announced the pin was overriding autodetection. Pinning xdotool on Wayland did nothing at all, since the selection chain reaches ydotool and wtype first. Pinning ibus where IBus support is unavailable skipped the whole IBus branch. In each case the user set a preference, saw no complaint, and got something else. These are one condition, not three: whatever ended up doing the typing is not what was pinned. The check compares the pin against the backend read back from final state, so a cause nobody has thought of yet is covered without another branch. It runs at the end of construction rather than inside _check_dependencies, which returns early on two paths and which the wtype probe can still override afterwards. The reason clause is added only where a generic check answers it -- the binary is absent, or IBus is unavailable -- and omitted otherwise rather than guessing. Reporting the source separately was letting the environment variable and the config setting disagree. _check_dependencies resolved the backend, then re-derived which source had won by asking again -- so the environment was parsed twice per construction, and a malformed value was reported to the user twice. Resolution now returns the backend and its source together, which fixes the duplicate warning and means the source named in a log line is the one that actually chose the backend. _backend_preference() keeps its signature and reads the first element. Two log lines also claimed VOCALINUX_FORCE_BACKEND regardless of where the pin came from, so a config-set backend was reported as an environment variable the user had never set. They now name the real source. The new warning is a startup diagnostic, not a live invariant: a tool switched later by _try_recover_from_fallback is not reported again. Noted in the docstring so the boundary is deliberate. * docs(user-guide): file the injection-backend section under Troubleshooting The section sat under Customization, directly beneath GPU Acceleration -- where the paragraph immediately above it reads "To check which backend is being used" about Vulkan and CUDA. The word means something else there, and two adjacent sections using it for different things is a bad place to explain either. It also is not a customization option. It exists because a compositor can make IBus report a commit as delivered while nothing arrives (#478, #485), and someone hitting that reads Troubleshooting, not Customization. The section already opens on the symptom, so it needs no rewriting to belong there. Pure reorder: no wording changes, and the heading text is unchanged so any existing link still resolves. * test(text-injection): cover the pin paths that skip the selection chain _check_dependencies had three uncovered branches, all reachable by pinning a backend and none of them exercised: the two early returns that hand over to IBus before a tool is chosen, and the daemonless-ydotool fallback a wtype pin lands on when wtype is absent. The early returns matter most, since the pin check runs at the end of construction precisely so those paths cannot skip it, and nothing proved that. Adds the ydotool counterpart to the missing-binary case, so a check keyed on one tool name cannot pass by coincidence; an X11 test for the guide's claim that any non-ibus pin turns the IBus path off, with a control asserting IBus is constructed without a pin so the assertion is the pin's doing; and an end-to-end explicit-auto case, which until now was only proven at the resolver rather than through selection. The pin log line said it was "overriding backend autodetection" before anything had been checked. An unavailable pin falls through to autodetection, so that line announced an outcome it could not know and then read as contradicting the "was not applied" warning. It now states the request only. _run_with_pin gains ydotoold_ready, defaulting to the previous behaviour so existing callers are unchanged. * fix(text-injection): report a config file the backend pin cannot be read from A corrupt config.json disappeared into logger.debug. The setting is hand-edited -- that is the workflow the user guide documents -- so a stray comma is a likely way to reach this, and staying quiet left the user with autodetection and the silent IBus miss the pin was set to avoid, with nothing to tell that apart from the pin not working. Unknown values already warned; an unusable file now does too, naming the file and the parse error. The bare handler was also catching AttributeError by accident. Valid JSON that is not an object -- a bare list, string, number or null -- reaches the lookup and raises there rather than at parse time, and so does a text_injection section that is not an object, where the top level is a mapping and the section is not. Both are now shape checks rather than exception handling, which is what lets the handler narrow to OSError and ValueError without those five shapes escaping it. Locating the file moves out of the try. It fixes the handler being unable to name the path it failed on, and it is a deliberate boundary: config_dir() resolving a path is not a failure this should paper over, so it is no longer guarded here at all. A missing config.json stays silent, which is the default install. * test(text-injection): stop the ibus-pin tests depending on an installed ydotoold The bridged-compositor and X11 cases asserted that a run logs no warnings at all. That is broader than what they are about, and _run_ibus_pin patches shutil.which to claim every tool exists without patching the probe that then shells out to one, so the real _ensure_ydotoold ran and warned whenever /usr/bin/ydotoold was absent. The tests passed on a machine that happens to have it installed and failed on the CI runners that do not. The assertions now name the warning they are about, and the helper patches _ensure_ydotoold the way its sibling _run_with_pin already did, so nothing in this class of test reads the host's installed packages. * fix(text-injection): report pending IBus initialization state * docs(text-injection): clarify backend pin behavior * fix(config): preserve a hand-edited backend across unrelated saves ConfigManager writes its full in-memory configuration on every save. A user who edits text_injection.backend in config.json while Vocalinux is running therefore loses that choice when an unrelated Settings or tray save writes the stale default back. Remember only the backend value observed at load or after a successful save. If the in-memory value is unchanged, preserve the current value from disk; if it changed through ConfigManager, treat that as the intentional write. Missing and explicit auto both reset to auto. The save aborts rather than overwriting a file whose JSON or text_injection shape cannot be read safely. This is deliberately per-key: no recursive configuration merge or injection-layer dependency is added. * style(text-injection): remove redundant typing suppression * fix(config): keep invalid UTF-8 config from blocking startup * fix(config): preserve malformed backend sections on unrelated saves * fix(config): retain text setting changes after malformed config * test(text-injection): annotate backend pin test helpers |

Pin the ydotoold probe in the wtype fallback tests (#841)
* test(injection): pin the ydotoold probe so local runs match CI * chore(pytest): filter the three known warnings out of the summary * fix(pytest): stop hiding save_settings deprecation globally Keep the ignore on the one test that still exercises the deprecated alias so the rest of the suite can surface new save_settings() calls. --------- Co-authored-by: Jatin K Malik <jatinkrmalik@gmail.com> |

fix(text-injection): route XWayland xdotool fallback through clipboard paste (#680)
* fix(text-injection): route XWayland xdotool fallback through clipboard paste xdotool type simulates keypresses against the active X keyboard layout, so a character the layout doesn't map comes out as the wrong glyph or garbled (#657). The native ydotool path already avoids this by pasting via the clipboard instead of typing (_inject_with_wayland_tool); the XWayland xdotool fallback (_inject_with_xdotool) never got the same treatment. Prefer clipboard paste on that fallback too when ydotool is installed, falling back to raw xdotool type only when no paste tool is available or the paste itself fails. Fixes #657 * fix(text-injection): X11 clipboard paste for the XWayland fallback jatinkrmalik's review on #680 pointed out the AppImage build does not bundle ydotool, so the prior fix's ydotool clipboard paste never ran on the actual reported setup; it fell through to the same layout-dependent xdotool type as before. It also flagged a real paste-target mismatch: an XWayland window reads the X11 CLIPBOARD selection, not the Wayland clipboard wl-copy/ydotool write to. The XWayland fallback now copies via xclip/xsel and pastes with xdotool key --clearmodifiers ctrl+v when either is installed, waiting for held modifiers to release first (the same wait already used by the native ydotool path). ydotool clipboard paste stays as a second fallback when xclip/xsel are absent; xdotool type is the last resort. New regression test drives inject_text() end-to-end with no ydotool on PATH, reproducing the reported AppImage/GNOME log rather than calling the fallback method directly, so it also covers the recovery check that could otherwise skip this path. * fix(text-injection): thread x11_only through clipboard read/clear so restore matches the paste backend jatinkrmalik's rebase pulled in the layout-aware paste work from #788, and greptile's review on the merged branch caught a real gap in this PR's own XWayland path: _copy_to_clipboard already takes x11_only to write the X11 CLIPBOARD via xclip/xsel (since that is what an xdotool paste actually reads), but _read_clipboard and _clear_clipboard never gained the same parameter. On a Wayland host, _read_clipboard prefers wl-paste, so the "previous clipboard" saved before an XWayland paste could be read from an unrelated Wayland clipboard, and restoring it back through _copy_to_clipboard with no x11_only wrote to that same wrong backend, leaving the X11 CLIPBOARD stuck on the dictated text. Threads x11_only through both helpers and every restore call site (the immediate-failure path and the delayed _restore closure), so an XWayland paste captures, clears, and restores the same X11 CLIPBOARD selection it wrote to. * fix(text-injection): annotate clipboard helpers and XWayland paste tests Greptile P2 on #680: give `_get_clipboard_tools` a return annotation and mark the new XWayland clipboard-paste regression tests `-> None`. * fix(text-injection): derive XWayland paste from environment Drop the ydotool/wl-copy second fallback on WAYLAND_XDOTOOL (wrong clipboard, and rc=0 is not a paste) and the x11_only flag stack. Paste picks xclip/xsel + xdotool from environment; user-facing copy stays on the session clipboard. * fix(text-injection): always pass host_env() to the paste chord The AST guard only recognizes a direct host_env() call. The ternary around it looked like we were handing the AppImage library path to xdotool. * test(text-injection): give XWayland injector stubs clipboard restore state _inject_with_xdotool now pastes first, and that path reads _clipboard_restore_target. The __new__ helper in test_text_injector_ext never set it. * fix(text-injection): skip clipboard restore on a stale paste failure If a newer paste has already copied its text, the older paste's failure handler must not write its saved clipboard back. Success restores already honored the generation counter; the failure path did not. * fix(text-injection): keep original clipboard across a stale paste failure Publish the restore target as soon as copy succeeds (first writer wins) so an overlapping paste inherits it. If the older paste then fails, the newer restore still writes the pre-first clipboard, not intermediate dictated text. --------- Co-authored-by: Jatin K Malik <jatinkrmalik@gmail.com> |

fix(snap): type into native Wayland apps with ydotool (#823)
* fix(snap): inject into native Wayland apps via ydotool Edge rev 7 only ships wtype and xdotool. GNOME rejects the virtual keyboard protocol, so the snap falls back to xdotool and types only into XWayland windows. Native GTK/Qt apps get nothing. Stage ydotool, request the uinput plug, and prefer ydotool when wtype is rejected. Distro ydotool 0.1.x still needs a writable /dev/uinput; log `snap connect vocalinux:uinput` when the Snap cannot open it. * docs(snap): v0.16.2 edge has no uinput plug The store snap (0.16.2, latest/edge rev 7) does not declare uinput. `sudo snap connect vocalinux:uinput` fails with "has no plug named uinput" and dictation only reaches XWayland apps. Spell that out in README, INSTALL, UPDATE, the website changelog, and the store copy so people do not run the 0.17 connect command against rev 7. * docs(snap): drop the unconfirmed 0.17 version from uinput notes Greptile P2: the tree is still 0.16.2 and the release process does not name the next tag. Tell people to refresh until `snap info` lists the uinput plug, instead of waiting on a version we have not cut. |

fix(injection): release ydotool Ctrl after a timed-out paste (#675)
subprocess.run(..., timeout=3) SIGKILLs the ydotool client. ydotoold keeps any keys it already applied, so virtual Left Ctrl can stay held until logout. Send a best-effort V-up/Ctrl-up (or a legacy ctrl tap) after paste failure. Fixes #658 |

fix(inject): layout-aware clipboard paste for Neo and friends (#788)
* fix(inject): resolve paste chord for non-QWERTY layouts ydotool was sending physical KEY_V (47) for Ctrl+V. On German Neo that key types p, so paste opened Print instead. Prefer wtype keysyms when usable; otherwise resolve the evdev key for Latin v via xkbcommon, and read KDE kxkbrc so Plasma Wayland Neo users are covered. Fixes #787 * fix(inject): read Plasma active layout from real session sources kxkbrc has no CurrentLayout/LayoutIndex, so multi-layout Neo always fell back to us at index 0 and paste still hit KEY_V. Prefer D-Bus getLayout or layout_memory.xml for the active layout, keep kxkbrc for the list only, and prefer KDE over leftover GNOME on Plasma. |

fix(wayland): drive keyboard shortcuts with wtype and ydotool (#715)
`_inject_shortcut_with_wayland_tool` could not deliver a shortcut on
either backend:
- wtype was refused outright with "Keyboard shortcuts not supported
with wtype", but wtype does chord: `-M` presses a modifier, `-k`
types a key, `-m` releases it. Modifiers must be released explicitly,
as wtype only drops them when the process exits.
- ydotool was handed the shortcut string as-is, `ydotool key ctrl+z`.
`ydotool key` takes raw evdev keycodes ("29:1 44:1 44:0 29:0") and
documents non-interpretable values as only causing a delay, so this
was a silent no-op that still returned True.
Parse the shortcut into a list of `(modifiers, key)` steps and emit the
right form per tool. Tokens are classified by name rather than by
position, because the mappings in `ActionHandler._SHORTCUT_ACTIONS` are
not all modifiers-first: `select_line` is "Home+shift+End", meaning
press Home, then Shift+End -- two sequential steps, not one chord. Each
non-modifier token closes a step and consumes the modifiers seen since
the previous one.
An unmappable ydotool key now fails loudly instead of emitting a
partial sequence, and a trailing modifier with no key is rejected at
parse time.
The X11 and WAYLAND_XDOTOOL paths are untouched -- xdotool already
accepts the string form directly.
Verified on Hyprland 0.56.2 with wtype 0.4 and ydotool 1.0.4, injecting
into a GTK3 window that logs key-press events. `wtype -M ctrl -k z -m
ctrl` arrives as z with the control modifier set; the two-step form
arrives as Home with no modifier, then End with shift; the raw keycode
form arrives as Control_L followed by z with control. Run on its own,
`ydotool key ctrl+z` exits 0 and delivers no key event at all -- the
failure this fixes.
`test_wtype_not_supported` asserted the old refusal, so it is replaced
by tests pinning the emitted argv for both tools, the two-step case,
and the unmappable-key rejection.

fix(inject): skip leftover IBus on KDE so dictation actually types (#753)
* fix(inject): skip leftover IBus on KDE so dictation actually types Test Dictation and clipboard paste worked. Inject claimed success and nothing showed up in Kate, Obsidian, terminals, or browsers. We started ibus-daemon on X11 even when the session never opted into IBus, then treated that daemon plus a bare xkb engine as active. commit_text() returns True. Qt/GTK on KDE never hear it. Do not spawn the daemon unless GTK_IM_MODULE / QT_IM_MODULE / XMODIFIERS already name IBus. On KDE, a running daemon without those env vars is not the session IM. Prefer a live WAYLAND_DISPLAY over a stale XDG_SESSION_TYPE=x11, and do not take the GNOME scoped-IBus shortcut on KDE. See #752 * style: wrap IBus helpers so black is happy CI lint failed on two lines in the #753 inject fix. Same behavior. * test(inject): leftover IBus on KDE should be skipped The CheckDependencies case still expected IBus for a leftover daemon on KDE. That is the #752 bug. It now expects skip and wtype instead. |

feat(text-injection): use IBus on unbridged compositors when ibus-wayland runs (#614)
* feat(text-injection): use IBus on unbridged compositors when ibus-wayland runs The `_IBUS_UNBRIDGED_COMPOSITORS` denylist assumes nothing sits between the compositor and ibus-daemon. Since IBus 1.5.32 that is no longer a safe assumption: IBus ships `ibus-wayland`, which implements `zwp_input_method_v2` and relays commits to native Wayland clients speaking text-input-v3. Every compositor on the denylist exposes `zwp_input_method_manager_v2`, so with the bridge running they are bridged, and skipping IBus falls back to a slower path unnecessarily. Add a live `pgrep -x ibus-wayland` probe and let it override the denylist. Scoped to the denylist branch only, so GNOME and the KDE VirtualKeyboard path (#574) are untouched. Behaviour is unchanged when the bridge is not running, and because the check is a live probe rather than configuration it degrades back to the denylist by itself if the bridge dies or was never started. Cost is one pgrep per TextInjector construction, not per injection. Verified on Hyprland 0.56.1 with IBus 1.5.34: dictation into Electron apps (VSCodium, Electron 39/41) and kitty commits through IBus, 303 chars in ~200ms versus 16.8s for 415 chars via `ydotool type`. Also adds VOCALINUX_FORCE_BACKEND (ibus|wtype|ydotool|auto) as discussed in #607. Autodetection has to infer whether IBus commits actually reach the focused app and cannot verify it -- commit_text() reports success even when the text is dropped -- so an escape hatch is useful when the inference is wrong, and it makes the two paths A/B-testable without editing code. Unknown values fall back to auto with a warning rather than silently pinning a backend. Related to #476 and #402; happy to drop this from the PR if it should follow their design instead. Two existing tests asserted the unbridged outcome without pinning the probe -- one blanket-mocks subprocess.run to returncode=0, the other shells out for real -- so both now state the "no bridge" precondition explicitly rather than depending on the host. Note for users: Chromium only opens a zwp_text_input_v3 seat when launched with --enable-wayland-ime; without it the bridge runs and the app still receives nothing. Closes #607 * test(text-injection): cover bridge override and forced-backend branches Codecov flagged the new branches in _check_dependencies as uncovered (74% patch, below the 80% target). Adds four tests to TestCheckDependencies: - unbridged compositor + ibus-wayland running selects IBus - VOCALINUX_FORCE_BACKEND=wtype pins wtype where IBus would be chosen - VOCALINUX_FORCE_BACKEND=ydotool pins ydotool even with wtype present - VOCALINUX_FORCE_BACKEND=ibus bypasses the reachability guards, with neither a daemon nor a bridge available Every line added by this PR is now covered. |

feat(flatpak): add Flatpak packaging for universal distribution (#484)
* feat(flatpak): add Flatpak packaging for universal distribution Adds a Flathub-ready Flatpak for the whisper.cpp engine, plus the minimal runtime adaptations Flatpak actually needs — deliberately scoped down from the earlier attempts (#416, #428), which bundled unrelated whisper.cpp GPU, audio, and clipboard changes. Packaging (packaging/flatpak/): - app manifest, AppStream metainfo, and desktop entry (com.vocalinux.Vocalinux) - generated offline Python dependency modules (flatpak-pip-generator) - bundled shared modules: PortAudio, libayatana-appindicator, xdotool, xsel Runtime changes (Flatpak-only, behaviour unchanged outside a sandbox): - utils/paths.py: honour XDG_CONFIG_HOME/XDG_DATA_HOME so config, models and runtime data live under ~/.var/app/<app-id> in the sandbox - autostart uses `flatpak run <app-id>` (the host launcher is always on PATH) - text injection and keyboard backend detect a Wayland host reached via XWayland (no Wayland socket granted) and route through xdotool / pynput-on-X11 - tray indicator references the exported `<app-id>-*` host icon theme names Also: a CI workflow building x86_64 + aarch64 bundles, and README / packaging README / distro-compatibility doc updates. Verified with a full flatpak-builder build + bundle install on aarch64: pywhispercpp loads its native libraries without LD_LIBRARY_PATH, XDG paths redirect correctly, bundled tools are present, and the entrypoint runs. Manifest and builddir lint are clean and AppStream metadata validates. Closes #167 * chore(flatpak): sync metainfo version to 0.14.0-beta Also ignore flatpak-build-dir/ so local builder output stays untracked. * refactor(flatpak): trim docs and comments after ponytail review Drop redundant packaging README command blocks, shrink path/tray/autostart comments, and stop ignoring a non-canonical build-dir name. * fix(flatpak): close readiness gaps for v0.14.0-beta Route log files through XDG data dirs so Flatpak keeps them under ~/.var/app, refresh AppStream screenshots to vocalinux.com, and use the SPDX GPL-3.0-only license id. * fix(flatpak): enable global hotkeys via evdev and --device=input pynput over XWayland only receives keys for the focused X client. Prefer evdev inside Flatpak and grant /dev/input so shortcuts work app-wide. * fix(flatpak): inject text with ydotool/uinput on Wayland xdotool only reaches XWayland clients, so typing appeared to succeed but never hit native apps. fix(text_injection): use wtype on compositors that don't bridge IBus to native apps (#486)
* fix(text_injection): use wtype on compositors that don't bridge IBus to native apps On Wayland compositors that don't bridge IBus to native clients (COSMIC, Sway, Hyprland, Wayfire, river, niri, ...), the IBus engine's commit_text() reaches only XWayland and GTK/Qt apps that load the IBus IM module. Native apps such as cosmic-term receive nothing, yet inject_text() reports success, so dictation silently does nothing. - Add a compositor denylist (_wayland_compositor_bridges_ibus) so IBus is skipped on those compositors and the virtual-keyboard path (wtype/ydotool) is used instead. A denylist (rather than an allowlist) keeps the existing IBus-preferred behaviour on unrecognised desktops. Complements the recent KDE Plasma Wayland handling, which covers the mirror-image case. - Replace the unreliable `ydotool type ""` probe (exits 0 even with no daemon) with _is_ydotoold_running(), so a daemonless ydotool install correctly falls back to wtype instead of selecting a no-op ydotool. - Add unit tests for the compositor gate, the ydotoold check, and that an active-IBus COSMIC session selects wtype. fix(wayland): reliable clipboard copy and ydotool injection (#480)
Two independent text-injection bugs on Wayland: 1. Clipboard copy silently failed. wl-copy/xclip/xsel fork a background process that keeps owning the selection; capturing its stderr with subprocess.PIPE makes run() block on the surviving child until the clipboard is next overwritten, so the call always hits its timeout and _copy_to_clipboard reports failure even though the copy succeeded. Redirect stdout/stderr to DEVNULL so run() only waits for the short-lived foreground process. 2. ydotool scrambled text on non-US keyboard layouts. `ydotool type` emits positional evdev keycodes that get re-interpreted through the active layout (assumed US QWERTY), so dictated text came out garbled on AZERTY/QWERTZ/Dvorak (e.g. "message" -> ",essqge") and non-ASCII was dropped. Always inject via clipboard paste (Ctrl+V) for ydotool, which is layout-independent and Unicode-safe. Adds regression tests for both. fix(threading): harden thread safety for Remote API, IBus, and text injection (#452)
* fix(threading): harden thread safety for HTTP session, IBus, and text injector Four critical thread-safety fixes identified during PR #335 review: 1. Remote API: snapshot _http_session under _model_lock in _process_audio_buffer() to prevent use-after-close races with reconfigure/reinitialize. Pass session as explicit parameter to _transcribe_with_remote_api, _try_whispercpp_server_api, and _try_openai_api. Call _http_session.close() before setting to None in reinitialize_after_resume(). Remove blocking connection probe from _init_remote_api() (settings dialog has a Test Connection button for that). 2. Text injector: extend _state_lock to protect stop() (writes _ibus_injector=None and _ibus_ready=False) and inject_text() reads of environment/_ibus_injector. Also guard environment/wayland_tool writes in _switch_to_non_ibus_backend() and WAYLAND_XDOTOOL fallback in inject_text's exception handler. 3. IBus engine: snapshot cls._active_instance into a local variable before the do_inject closure in the socket server handler, closing the TOCTOU race with do_destroy(). 4. Test suspend handler: add _http_session=None to _make_manager() fixture so reinitialize_after_resume() finds the attribute. Ultraworked with [Sisyphus](https://github.com/code-yeongyu/oh-my-openagent) * test(threading): update tests for thread-safety changes - test_recognition_manager_remote_api: pass session param to _transcribe_with_remote_api, _try_openai_api, and _try_whispercpp_server_api. Update assert_called_once_with patterns for the new session argument. Simplify init tests that no longer need connection probe mocks (removed from _init_remote_api). - test_text_injector: add threading.Lock to all TextInjector.__new__() instances so _state_lock is available for lock-guarded methods. - test_suspend_handler: add _http_session=None to _make_manager() fixture so reinitialize_after_resume() finds the attribute. Ultraworked with [Sisyphus](https://github.com/code-yeongyu/oh-my-openagent) * test(threading): improve coverage for thread-safety fixes Add tests for _process_audio_buffer remote API dispatch (session snapshot under lock, early return when session is None) and reinitialize_after_resume session close. Mark server_thread as pragma: no cover (blocked by conftest to prevent CI hangs). |

fix(whispercpp): reduce CPU threads and ensure GPU backend builds in dev mode (#439)
* fix(whispercpp): reduce CPU threads and ensure GPU backend builds in dev mode
- Reduce default n_threads from cpu_count() (16) to max 8 (CPU) / max 4 (GPU)
- Add runtime pywhispercpp GPU capability detection (_detect_pywhispercpp_gpu_backend)
- Make n_threads configurable via whispercpp_n_threads config option
- Fix install.sh regression: GPU source build was skipped in --dev mode
- Extract GPU install logic into install_whispercpp_with_gpu_support()
- Add is_pywhispercpp_gpu_capable() to detect GPU libs in installed pywhispercpp
- Force rebuild pywhispercpp when GPU is detected but lacks GPU support
Fixes CPU spiking to 100% on GPU systems due to excessive thread count
and ensures dev installs get GPU acceleration.
* fix(audio): skip output-only HDMI devices when selecting input device
Add _resolve_valid_input_device() that filters devices by
maxInputChannels > 0, falling back preferred → default → first valid.
Previously, HDMI output devices (0 input channels) could be selected
as the default audio input, causing 'Invalid number of channels' errors.
Now both _record_audio() and _attempt_audio_reconnection() validate the
device has input channels before probing or opening the stream.
* fix(whispercpp): treat n_threads=0 as auto-detect, not literal zero
Config default whispercpp_n_threads=0 was being passed directly
to whisper.cpp as n_threads=0, causing 'cannot create std::vector
larger than max_size()' transcription errors. Now 0 and negative
values are treated as auto-detect, falling through to the smart
thread count logic (max 4 with GPU, max 8 on CPU).
* test: add whispercpp_n_threads to mock assertions and config defaults
Update test_main.py mock to include the new whispercpp_n_threads=0 kwarg
and test_config_manager.py to assert the default config value.
* fix(audio): harden device enumeration against test mocks
The new HDMI-filter helper and GPU-backend detector crashed unit tests
that pass MagicMock() for the PyAudio/pathlib surfaces:
- _find_pywhispercpp_shared_library_dirs hit TypeError when tests
monkey-patch os.stat (Path.is_dir internally calls S_ISDIR on a
non-int st_mode). Widen the catch to OSError/TypeError/ValueError so
unconfigured stat results just skip the candidate dir.
- _resolve_valid_input_device crashed with 'MagicMock > int' on
audio.get_device_count() / info.get('maxInputChannels'). Coerce the
count, treat zero/unknown as 'use system default', and include
non-dict info objects rather than filtering everything out.
No production behavior changes: real PyAudio always returns int counts
and dict device info, so the HDMI filter still works as designed.
* test(recognition): cover new HDMI filter and GPU backend detector
- TestResolveValidInputDevice: 9 cases for the HDMI-filter resolver
(preferred passthrough, HDMI fallback, no-default fallback, no-input
None return, and three mock-tolerance escape hatches).
- TestDetectPywhispercppGpuBackend: 4 cases for runtime GPU library
detection (cpu/vulkan/cuda/empty dirs).
- TestFindPywhispercppSharedLibraryDirsResilience: proves the widened
exception catch survives a TypeError from pathlib.Path.is_dir.
* test(text-injection): wait for IBus init thread to avoid race on slow runners
The IBus environment promotion runs in a background daemon thread spawned
by TextInjector.__init__. The two TestIBusRuntimeFallback cases asserted
on injector.environment immediately after construction, which raced the
thread on Python 3.10 GHA runners and produced intermittent failures.
Join the init thread (with a generous timeout) before asserting, so the
test exercises the post-warmup state deterministically.

fix(text-injection): handle non-ASCII characters with ydotool via clipboard paste (fixes #362) (#376)
* fix(text-injection): handle non-ASCII characters with ydotool via clipboard paste (fixes #362) ydotool simulates evdev key events which only map to US ASCII keycodes. Non-ASCII characters (accented letters like á, é, ú, ñ, ü, etc.) get silently dropped during injection, so 'Esdrújula' becomes 'Esdrjula'. When ydotool is the active Wayland injection tool and the text contains non-ASCII characters, the new code: 1. Copies text to clipboard via wl-copy (or xclip/xsel fallback) 2. Simulates Ctrl+V via ydotool key to paste it 3. Falls back to regular ydotool type if clipboard tools unavailable This preserves all Unicode characters perfectly. ASCII-only text still uses ydotool type directly for lower latency. * style: fix black formatting in text_injector.py * test: add coverage for clipboard paste paths (xclip/xsel/wtype fallbacks) Covers the uncovered paths flagged by Codecov: - xclip fallback when wl-copy unavailable - xsel fallback when wl-copy/xclip unavailable - wtype Ctrl+V paste simulation - Paste failure (Ctrl+V fails after clipboard copy) - No clipboard tools available * refactor(text-injection): eliminate duplication and dead code in clipboard paste path - _inject_via_clipboard_paste now delegates to _copy_to_clipboard instead of reimplementing wl-copy/xclip/xsel selection (removes ~30 lines of duplication identified in code review) - Remove unreachable wtype branch from _inject_via_clipboard_paste; wtype handles Unicode natively via Wayland virtual-keyboard protocol so it never calls this method - Drop unnecessary time.sleep(0.05) after clipboard write; subprocess.run for wl-copy is synchronous so the sleep was a no-op - Add debug log noting the clipboard will be temporarily overwritten so operators can observe the side-effect without diving into the code test improvements: - Fix fragile string-repr assertion in test_ydotool_ascii_uses_type_directly; now compares actual list slices and verifies wl-copy is NOT called - Replace test_clipboard_paste_with_wtype with test_wtype_injects_unicode_directly which actively asserts wtype calls the tool directly without clipboard - Add test_inject_text_ydotool_non_ascii_end_to_end covering the full inject_text -> _inject_with_wayland_tool -> _inject_via_clipboard_paste stack for accented text on Wayland+ydotool (fixes #362) - Remove now-unnecessary @patch('time.sleep') decorators from three tests |

Key features: - IBus proxy engine that passes through normal keyboard input - Text injection via Unix socket IPC - User-level component installation (no sudo required) - Auto-reactivation when user switches keyboard layouts - Graceful fallback when IBus is unavailable Changes: - New ibus_engine.py with VocalinuxEngine and IBusTextInjector - TextInjector now prefers IBus on Wayland for best compatibility - Add IBus GObject bindings to system dependencies in install.sh - Add comprehensive tests for IBus engine 🤖 Generated with [Claude Code](https://claude.com/claude-code) Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> * security: secure IBus socket with permissions and peer verification - Set directory to 0o700 (owner-only access) - Set socket to 0o600 (owner-only read/write) - Add SO_PEERCRED verification to reject connections from other users This provides defense-in-depth: even if directory permissions are bypassed, the socket server verifies the connecting process UID. 🤖 Generated with [Claude Code](https://claude.com/claude-code) Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> * fix: address PR review feedback for IBus text injection - Fix infinite loop in socket server by adding _server_running flag - Use sys.executable instead of hardcoded python3 for venv compatibility - Also inherit environment (env=os.environ.copy()) for venv deps - Fix component XML to use sys.executable in <exec> tag - Replace unsafe pgrep with PID file tracking and /proc verification - Integrate TextInjector.stop() in TrayIndicator._quit() for cleanup - Remove unused is_engine_registered import - Fix redundant hasattr check to use proper None comparison - Auto-detect and update stale IBus component XML on startup 🤖 Generated with [Claude Code](https://claude.com/claude-code) Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> --------- Co-authored-by: AntoineMontane <monnet.antoine@gmail.com> Co-authored-by: Claude Opus 4.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> |

fix(text-injection): remove unnecessary shell escaping for subprocess calls (#149)
Removes the _escape_text method and its usage since text is passed to subprocess.run() via list arguments, not shell strings. When using subprocess with a list (without shell=True), arguments are passed directly to the command without shell interpretation, making shell escaping unnecessary and actually harmful. This fixes the bug where apostrophes and other special characters were typed with backslash escapes (e.g., "Let\'s" instead of "Let's"). Changes: - Remove _escape_text() method from TextInjector class - Remove escaped_text variable from inject_text() method - Pass text directly to _inject_with_xdotool() and _inject_with_wayland_tool() - Update docstrings to remove references to escaped text - Update tests to verify text is NOT escaped when passed to subprocess Closes #119 |

test: Improve test coverage to 80%+ (#122)
* test: Improve test coverage to 80% Increased test coverage from ~33% to 80.15% statement coverage. New test files added: - test_action_handler.py (100% coverage) - test_version.py (100% coverage) - test_logging_manager.py (100% coverage) - test_common_types.py - test_speech_recognition_init.py (100% coverage) - test_resource_manager.py (93% coverage) Significantly expanded existing tests: - test_tray_indicator.py: 76% -> 98% - test_main.py: 50% -> 92% - test_text_injector.py: 60% -> 94% - test_recognition_manager.py: 30% -> 48% - test_command_processor.py: 85% -> 98% - test_keyboard_shortcuts.py: 88% -> 95% - test_config_manager.py: improved to 98% - test_audio_feedback.py: improved to 92% Configuration changes: - Updated pyproject.toml to exclude untestable GTK dialog files (settings_dialog.py, logging_dialog.py) from coverage metrics Key testing improvements: - Added comprehensive GTK mocking for UI components - Added edge case tests for text injection on X11/Wayland - Added keyboard shortcut injection tests - Added error handling and callback tests - Added configuration management tests * fix: Use runtime CI mode detection to fix Python 3.8/3.10 tests Change CI_MODE from module-level constant to _is_ci_mode() function that is evaluated at runtime. This ensures pytest detection works correctly on all Python versions, since pytest modules may not be loaded at import time. * fix: Add PYTEST_RUNNING env var for reliable pytest detection in CI The previous approach to detect pytest at runtime wasn't working reliably on Python 3.8/3.10 in CI environments. This adds a PYTEST_RUNNING=1 environment variable set early in conftest.py that _is_ci_mode() can check to reliably determine if tests are running. * fix: Use patch.object for reliable mocking in audio_feedback tests The previous approach using patch() with module paths didn't work reliably because the module reimport caused the patched objects to not be the same as the ones the functions referenced. Using patch.object() on the imported module's attributes ensures the patches are applied to the actual objects the functions use. * fix: Use patch.object for reliable mocking in test_settings_callback The test was failing on Python 3.8/3.10 because the module-level patch for SettingsDialog wasn't being applied reliably across all Python versions due to import timing differences. Using patch.object() on the imported module ensures the mock is applied to the actual reference that _on_settings_clicked() uses, regardless of Python version or module caching behavior. |

feat: Alpha Launch v0.2.0 - Complete UX Overhaul 🚀🎤 (#39)
* feat: prepare for v0.2.0-alpha release * feat: prepare for v0.2.0-alpha release * chore: remove CHANGELOG.md, use GitHub Releases instead * refactor: use existing About dialog instead of Settings section * style: enhance About dialog UI readability * style: fix formatting with black and isort * feat: show VAD and silence timeout settings for Whisper engine - Renamed 'VOSK Settings' to 'Recognition Settings' - VAD Sensitivity and Silence Timeout now apply to both engines - Added tooltips explaining each setting - VOSK-specific model info only shown when VOSK selected * fix: resolve overlapping UI elements in settings dialog * fix: save VAD and silence timeout settings for both engines Previously these settings were only saved when VOSK was selected. Now they persist correctly for Whisper as well. * fix: show download progress when selecting undownloaded model Previously when auto-applying settings, models would download silently in the background without showing the progress dialog. Now: - Download progress dialog appears for undownloaded models - Model icons update correctly after download completes * feat: add download progress, speed, ETA and cancel button - Show real download progress percentage for VOSK models - Display download speed (MB/s) and estimated time remaining - Add Cancel button to abort downloads - Update status during extraction phase - Whisper downloads still pulse (uses internal downloader) * fix: defer model download until needed, don't block startup - App now starts instantly even if models aren't downloaded - Models are downloaded on-demand when selected in Settings - If user tries to dictate without a model, plays error sound - Added model_ready property to check if engine is usable * fix: improve first-run UX without downloaded models - Settings dialog now defaults to smallest available model, not saved config - Only show saved model if it's actually downloaded - Add desktop notification when trying to dictate without a model - Prevents auto-downloading large models on first launch * feat: add download progress tracking for Whisper models - Implement custom Whisper model download with progress/speed/ETA - Uses OpenAI's CDN URLs directly instead of whisper.load_model() - Progress callback works the same as VOSK downloads - Supports cancellation during download * fix: enable download progress callback for Whisper models Progress callback was only being set for VOSK downloads, not Whisper. Now both engines show real-time progress, speed, and ETA. * fix: update tests for defer_download and config manager mocking - test_main: Mock ConfigManager to prevent saved config from overriding test values - test_settings_dialog: Mock ModelDownloadDialog to prevent GTK init errors - test_speech_recognition: Use proper MockVoskModule class instead of MagicMock, pass defer_download=False for download test - test_whisper_support: Pass defer_download=False to trigger model loading in test * fix: resolve test failures for CI - test_main: Fix ConfigManager patch path to use source module - test_settings_dialog: Mock _is_vosk_model_downloaded and _is_whisper_model_downloaded to skip download flow, add missing dialog attributes - test_speech_recognition: Replace recognizer with properly configured mock that returns valid JSON, fixing test isolation issues when running all tests together * fix: mock _download_whisper_model in whisper test to avoid requests exception handling issue * fix: add gir1.2-girepository-2.0 dep for PyGObject on Ubuntu 24.04 - Add missing girepository-2.0 package for newer Ubuntu runners - Use --no-build-isolation for PyGObject to use system packages * fix: skip PyGObject pip install, use system python3-gi package - Use --no-deps for editable install to skip PyGObject - Install other deps explicitly without PyGObject - Add python3-gi-cairo for complete GTK support - Removes problematic girepository-2.0 build requirement * fix: install PyGObject via pip with proper build deps - Remove python3-gi/python3-gi-cairo (doesn't work with setup-python) - Install PyGObject from pip after installing build dependencies - Simplify venv setup without --system-site-packages hack * Fix GObject * fix: set GI_TYPELIB_PATH for pip-installed PyGObject to find AppIndicator3 |
