soubarnak e100af7bcd fix(injection): align fallback ladder to portal>wtype>ydotool>xdotool>manual
Ticket #31 review found startup and demote paths preferring ydotool
over wtype, with a KDE ydotool-first exception, contradicting the
decided order in spec #16 (portal first where a backend implements
it, then direct keysym typing, then the virtual-input tool, then
XWayland-only injection, then manual paste).

- Auto-selection is now portal, wtype, ready ydotool, daemonless
ydotool, xdotool on every desktop including KDE; the __init__ wtype
probe validates wtype and demotes on compositor rejection.
- Portal-deny demotion, IBus-fallback switch, XWayland recovery, and
a new wtype runtime-failure retry all follow the same rung order
  with partial-type accounting preserved.
- Ladder suite grows to 14 tests pinning KDE portal selection,
wtype-before-ydotool selection, and each demotion trigger.
- USER_GUIDE states the full rung order and portal-first on KDE.

soubarnak ea7be5f111 feat(identity): rename user-visible identity to voculinux with one-time legacy import
The fork takes its own name everywhere a user can see it: binaries
(voculinux, voculinux-gui), desktop entry, autostart, tray, D-Bus
namespace (com.voculinux.Voculinux, no alias for the old name),
config/data/cache dirs, single-instance lock, IBus engine identity,
tray icons, resource prefixes, VOCULINUX_* environment names, and the
update-checker user agent. The internal Python module stays vocalinux
and the distribution metadata keeps the upstream URLs as provenance.

On first run a previous Vocalinux install's config.json, custom
dictionary, and portal restore token are copied once into the new
locations (new config always wins, no merge, no write-back); models
re-resolve through the pinned-checksum download path. An offline
naming-sweep test proves no old-name strings remain on user-visible
surfaces outside the allowlist.

Jatin K MalikandGitHub f013b7ff88 fix(text-injection): route XWayland clients without IBus through xdotool (#1003)
* fix(text-injection): route XWayland clients without IBus through xdotool

On KDE Plasma Wayland with the KWin IBus bridge enabled, Vocalinux injects through IBus. An X11 client under XWayland only reaches IBus when it loaded an IBus input method module from GTK_IM_MODULE, QT_IM_MODULE or XMODIFIERS. Without one, the engine commit lands in no input context and still reports OK, so the text was lost with no fallback.

Before each WAYLAND_IBUS injection, check XWayland's active window. A real client whose own environment does not select IBus gets that segment through the WAYLAND_XDOTOOL path, and the backend returns to IBus afterwards so native Wayland apps keep using it.

Fixes #972

* fix(text-injection): honour IBus pins and the client toolkit in the XWayland detour

Keep IBus when the user pinned it, judge a GTK or Qt client only by its own toolkit's IM variable (read from the libraries it maps), and have the clipboard restore after an XWayland paste read the X11 clipboard it wrote even after the backend switched back to IBus.

* fix(text-injection): keep a non-text X11 clipboard on the XWayland paste route

WAYLAND_XDOTOOL pasted through the X11 clipboard even when it held an image or file, which it cannot save and restore. Check the clipboard targets there as the X11 route already does, and type the text instead when they hold no text.

d3ba4ee743 fix(injection): send newlines as Return on the xdotool backend (#962)
* fix(injection): send newlines as Return on the xdotool backend

xdotool type maps '\n' to the Linefeed keysym, which GTK targets
silently drop — "new line" produced nothing on X11 even though the
segment reached the injector. Split each chunk on '\n' and press
Return between typed segments so a newline lands as a real keypress
in every app.

Verified against a live GtkTextView on Xvfb: the same "A\nB" input
that previously produced 'AB' now produces 'A\nB'.

Fixes #955

* fix(commands): consume trailing punctuation after mid-utterance commands

"New paragraph." inside a longer utterance substituted correctly but
left the engine's sentence-final period typed after the break
("\\n\\n. Does this work now?"). Text-command substitution now
consumes a run of trailing , . ! ? ; : … when it precedes whitespace
or the end of the segment — the reporter's comma-phrased case
("…, new paragraph, …") stops leaking the stray comma the same way.
A mark glued to following text ("newline.io") is untouched.

Fixes #955

* fix(injection, commands): resume mid-chunk on retry, don't eat produced marks

Greptile review follow-ups on #962:

- A failed Return mid-chunk left 'typed' at the chunk start, so the
retry re-sent text xdotool had already delivered. 'typed' now
advances per typed segment and per Return keypress, so the retry
resumes exactly at the un-typed position — and the clipboard
fallback reports the same progress if retries run out.
- _TRAILING_PUNCTUATION could consume a mark produced by an earlier
command replacement ('hello new line exclamation mark' gave '\\n'
instead of '\\n!'). The eater now only consumes marks before
whitespace; the end-of-utterance case ('hello new line.') is a
pre-pass on the raw segment before any substitution runs.

* style: black-format comment indent and test condition

* fix(commands): strip segment before the end-of-utterance cleanup

Trailing whitespace ('hello new line. ') hid the final mark from the
pre-pass: the raw segment ended in a space, and the stripped segment
left the dot at end-of-string where the mid-utterance eater cannot
touch it. Strip first, then run the cleanup.

Also add the missing type hints on the new test helper.

0ddb127437 fix(commands): keep line breaks from standalone voice commands (#958)
* fix(commands): keep line breaks from standalone voice commands

Two stacked defects ate the newline "new line" / "new paragraph"
produce when spoken alone:

* _normalize_segment_text stripped all leading whitespace, so the
command's leading newline never reached the injector (a clean
"new line" segment was dropped entirely).
* whisper.cpp transcripts arrive punctuated ("New line."), which
missed the exact-match ladder and left a stray "." after the
substituted break, injected as ". ".

Normalize now strips only spaces/tabs, and the generic path
substitutes on a punctuation-stripped core when the whole segment
is command phrases, so engine edge punctuation cannot leak while
real text keeps it.

Fixes #955

* fix(injection): deliver newline-only segments to the focused app

inject_text treated whitespace-only text as empty and returned early,
so the "\n" a standalone "new line" now correctly produces was
discarded before any backend ran ("Empty text provided, skipping
injection"). Only a truly empty segment is skipped; whitespace-only
input is typed/pasted verbatim (xdotool types "\n" as Return).

Space/tab-only segments never reach this point: segment normalization
strips them upstream.

Fixes #955

* fix(injection): keep skipping space/tab-only segments

The previous commit let every whitespace-only string through, which
also delivered bare spaces and tabs a caller never wants typed.
Narrow the skip to text with no content outside space/tab so "\n"
still reaches the backend while " " stays a no-op (the pre-existing
test_empty_text_injection contract).

Fixes #955

* fix(injection): deliver newline segments over IBus too

IBusTextInjector.inject_text had the same whitespace guard and dropped
"\n" before it reached the engine socket; narrow it the same way so
a newline-only segment is sent while space/tab-only stays a no-op.

Also let capitalize_sentences uppercase the first letter after leading
whitespace, so Vosk + auto_capitalize keeps working on "\n hello".

Covers Greptile's findings: real-socket test for the IBus path, the
capitalize regression via the main() callback seam, and type hints on
the new injector tests.

Fixes #955

* test(injection): add type hints to new IBus socket test

AGENTS.md requires hints on every signature; the Greptile review
flagged the new test for missing them.

HashingandGitHub 12e440ce1c feat(text-injection): let config.json pin the injection backend (#649)
* feat(text-injection): let config.json pin the injection backend (#476)

Autodetection has to infer whether IBus commits actually reach the
focused application, and it cannot verify that: commit_text() reports
success even when the compositor drops the text. When the inference is
wrong the failure is silent, and dictation appears to work in XWayland
windows while doing nothing in native ones.

VOCALINUX_FORCE_BACKEND already provides an escape hatch, but it is an
environment variable: it covers a single run, is undocumented outside
the test suite, and a user whose compositor is misdetected has to wrap
the launcher in a shell script to make the choice stick.

Add a persistent `text_injection.backend` setting alongside it, accepting
the same ibus/wtype/ydotool/auto values. The environment variable still
wins so a backend can be A/B-tested for one run without touching the
saved configuration, and the startup log now names which of the two
pinned the choice so a stale setting is diagnosable from --debug output.

Reads the file directly rather than through ConfigManager, keeping this
package independent of the UI layer, exactly as _should_copy_to_clipboard
already does. An unreadable or corrupt config falls back to autodetection
instead of blocking startup, and an unrecognised value is ignored with a
warning so a typo cannot silently pin the wrong backend.

Defaults to "auto", so existing installs behave exactly as before.

* fix(text-injection): tell an explicit VOCALINUX_FORCE_BACKEND=auto from unset

The variable is meant to override the saved text_injection.backend pin for a
single run, which is what makes the two paths A/B-testable without editing
config. Setting it to auto -- the value that means "autodetect this time" --
did not do that: the reader collapsed unset and an explicit auto into the same
"auto" return, so the caller read both as "nothing was forced" and fell through
to the saved pin. The pin won, and there was no way to ask for autodetection
for one run short of editing the config file the variable exists to avoid.

Read the variable as three states instead: unset, an explicit auto, or a
backend name. Only the unset state consults config, so an explicit auto now
short-circuits to autodetection.

An unrecognised value is deliberately treated as unset rather than as auto. A
typo means the user failed to override their preference, not that they asked to
discard it, so falling through to a valid saved pin is the kinder reading.

_forced_backend() keeps its signature and its collapsed return, so its existing
callers and tests are untouched; the new three-state reading lives alongside it
and is what the preference resolver consumes.

* feat(text-injection): accept an xdotool pin and warn when ibus overrides the denylist

Two gaps in the pinnable backend set.

xdotool was not accepted, even though on X11 it is the tool that actually does
the typing. Users were told to pin a *Wayland* backend to mean "not IBus", and
get xdotool as a side effect. Naming it directly is what they were reaching for.
On Wayland it needs no special handling: the value skips IBus like any other
non-ibus pin and falls through to the existing XWayland fallback, so no branch
is added to the selection chain.

The accepted values now live in one tuple, because four places listed them --
both readers and both "expected ..." messages -- and a fifth value would have
had to be added to all four. The two messages derive from the tuple, so they
cannot fall behind it.

Pinning ibus also silently bypasses the compositor denylist. That check exists
because a denylisted compositor makes IBus report a commit as delivered while
the text never arrives (#478, #485), so a pin is the one setting that can put a
user back into a failure with no symptom other than nothing happening. The pin
is still honoured -- an override that ignores you is worse than one that warns
-- but it now says so at warning level, names the compositor, and gives the
remedy. It stays quiet when the compositor genuinely bridges IBus, including a
denylisted one running the ibus-wayland bridge, and on X11 where the denylist
does not apply.

The check is evaluated once. The guard chain short-circuits on the pin, so a
pinned run never reaches the existing compositor branch, and this is its first
and only call -- worth knowing because the check can shell out to pgrep or
gdbus. A test asserts the call count so that stays true.

Documents xdotool in the value table and rewrites the X11 paragraph, which
described xdotool as the implicit result of pinning something else rather than
as a value you can name.

* fix(text-injection): say so when the pinned backend is not the one in use

A pin could be quietly ignored. Pinning a tool that is not installed fell
through to autodetection and typed with whatever it found, under a log line
that had already announced the pin was overriding autodetection. Pinning
xdotool on Wayland did nothing at all, since the selection chain reaches
ydotool and wtype first. Pinning ibus where IBus support is unavailable skipped
the whole IBus branch. In each case the user set a preference, saw no
complaint, and got something else.

These are one condition, not three: whatever ended up doing the typing is not
what was pinned. The check compares the pin against the backend read back from
final state, so a cause nobody has thought of yet is covered without another
branch. It runs at the end of construction rather than inside
_check_dependencies, which returns early on two paths and which the wtype probe
can still override afterwards. The reason clause is added only where a generic
check answers it -- the binary is absent, or IBus is unavailable -- and omitted
otherwise rather than guessing.

Reporting the source separately was letting the environment variable and the
config setting disagree. _check_dependencies resolved the backend, then
re-derived which source had won by asking again -- so the environment was
parsed twice per construction, and a malformed value was reported to the user
twice. Resolution now returns the backend and its source together, which fixes
the duplicate warning and means the source named in a log line is the one that
actually chose the backend. _backend_preference() keeps its signature and reads
the first element.

Two log lines also claimed VOCALINUX_FORCE_BACKEND regardless of where the pin
came from, so a config-set backend was reported as an environment variable the
user had never set. They now name the real source.

The new warning is a startup diagnostic, not a live invariant: a tool switched
later by _try_recover_from_fallback is not reported again. Noted in the
docstring so the boundary is deliberate.

* docs(user-guide): file the injection-backend section under Troubleshooting

The section sat under Customization, directly beneath GPU Acceleration --
where the paragraph immediately above it reads "To check which backend is
being used" about Vulkan and CUDA. The word means something else there, and
two adjacent sections using it for different things is a bad place to explain
either.

It also is not a customization option. It exists because a compositor can make
IBus report a commit as delivered while nothing arrives (#478, #485), and
someone hitting that reads Troubleshooting, not Customization. The section
already opens on the symptom, so it needs no rewriting to belong there.

Pure reorder: no wording changes, and the heading text is unchanged so any
existing link still resolves.

* test(text-injection): cover the pin paths that skip the selection chain

_check_dependencies had three uncovered branches, all reachable by pinning a
backend and none of them exercised: the two early returns that hand over to
IBus before a tool is chosen, and the daemonless-ydotool fallback a wtype pin
lands on when wtype is absent. The early returns matter most, since the pin
check runs at the end of construction precisely so those paths cannot skip
it, and nothing proved that.

Adds the ydotool counterpart to the missing-binary case, so a check keyed on
one tool name cannot pass by coincidence; an X11 test for the guide's claim
that any non-ibus pin turns the IBus path off, with a control asserting IBus
is constructed without a pin so the assertion is the pin's doing; and an
end-to-end explicit-auto case, which until now was only proven at the
resolver rather than through selection.

The pin log line said it was "overriding backend autodetection" before
anything had been checked. An unavailable pin falls through to autodetection,
so that line announced an outcome it could not know and then read as
contradicting the "was not applied" warning. It now states the request only.

_run_with_pin gains ydotoold_ready, defaulting to the previous behaviour so
existing callers are unchanged.

* fix(text-injection): report a config file the backend pin cannot be read from

A corrupt config.json disappeared into logger.debug. The setting is
hand-edited -- that is the workflow the user guide documents -- so a stray
comma is a likely way to reach this, and staying quiet left the user with
autodetection and the silent IBus miss the pin was set to avoid, with nothing
to tell that apart from the pin not working. Unknown values already warned;
an unusable file now does too, naming the file and the parse error.

The bare handler was also catching AttributeError by accident. Valid JSON
that is not an object -- a bare list, string, number or null -- reaches the
lookup and raises there rather than at parse time, and so does a
text_injection section that is not an object, where the top level is a
mapping and the section is not. Both are now shape checks rather than
exception handling, which is what lets the handler narrow to OSError and
ValueError without those five shapes escaping it.

Locating the file moves out of the try. It fixes the handler being unable to
name the path it failed on, and it is a deliberate boundary: config_dir()
resolving a path is not a failure this should paper over, so it is no longer
guarded here at all.

A missing config.json stays silent, which is the default install.

* test(text-injection): stop the ibus-pin tests depending on an installed ydotoold

The bridged-compositor and X11 cases asserted that a run logs no warnings at
all. That is broader than what they are about, and _run_ibus_pin patches
shutil.which to claim every tool exists without patching the probe that then
shells out to one, so the real _ensure_ydotoold ran and warned whenever
/usr/bin/ydotoold was absent. The tests passed on a machine that happens to
have it installed and failed on the CI runners that do not.

The assertions now name the warning they are about, and the helper patches
_ensure_ydotoold the way its sibling _run_with_pin already did, so nothing in
this class of test reads the host's installed packages.

* fix(text-injection): report pending IBus initialization state

* docs(text-injection): clarify backend pin behavior

* fix(config): preserve a hand-edited backend across unrelated saves

ConfigManager writes its full in-memory configuration on every save. A user who edits text_injection.backend in config.json while Vocalinux is running therefore loses that choice when an unrelated Settings or tray save writes the stale default back.

Remember only the backend value observed at load or after a successful save. If the in-memory value is unchanged, preserve the current value from disk; if it changed through ConfigManager, treat that as the intentional write. Missing and explicit auto both reset to auto.

The save aborts rather than overwriting a file whose JSON or text_injection shape cannot be read safely. This is deliberately per-key: no recursive configuration merge or injection-layer dependency is added.

* style(text-injection): remove redundant typing suppression

* fix(config): keep invalid UTF-8 config from blocking startup

* fix(config): preserve malformed backend sections on unrelated saves

* fix(config): retain text setting changes after malformed config

* test(text-injection): annotate backend pin test helpers

d5656b8060 fix(text-injection): route XWayland xdotool fallback through clipboard paste (#680)
* fix(text-injection): route XWayland xdotool fallback through clipboard paste

xdotool type simulates keypresses against the active X keyboard layout, so
a character the layout doesn't map comes out as the wrong glyph or garbled
(#657). The native ydotool path already avoids this by pasting via the
clipboard instead of typing (_inject_with_wayland_tool); the XWayland
xdotool fallback (_inject_with_xdotool) never got the same treatment.

Prefer clipboard paste on that fallback too when ydotool is installed,
falling back to raw xdotool type only when no paste tool is available or
the paste itself fails.

Fixes #657

* fix(text-injection): X11 clipboard paste for the XWayland fallback

jatinkrmalik's review on #680 pointed out the AppImage build does not
bundle ydotool, so the prior fix's ydotool clipboard paste never ran on
the actual reported setup; it fell through to the same layout-dependent
xdotool type as before. It also flagged a real paste-target mismatch:
an XWayland window reads the X11 CLIPBOARD selection, not the Wayland
clipboard wl-copy/ydotool write to.

The XWayland fallback now copies via xclip/xsel and pastes with
xdotool key --clearmodifiers ctrl+v when either is installed, waiting
for held modifiers to release first (the same wait already used by the
native ydotool path). ydotool clipboard paste stays as a second
fallback when xclip/xsel are absent; xdotool type is the last resort.

New regression test drives inject_text() end-to-end with no ydotool on
PATH, reproducing the reported AppImage/GNOME log rather than calling
the fallback method directly, so it also covers the recovery check
that could otherwise skip this path.

* fix(text-injection): thread x11_only through clipboard read/clear so restore matches the paste backend

jatinkrmalik's rebase pulled in the layout-aware paste work from #788,
and greptile's review on the merged branch caught a real gap in this
PR's own XWayland path: _copy_to_clipboard already takes x11_only to
write the X11 CLIPBOARD via xclip/xsel (since that is what an xdotool
paste actually reads), but _read_clipboard and _clear_clipboard never
gained the same parameter. On a Wayland host, _read_clipboard prefers
wl-paste, so the "previous clipboard" saved before an XWayland paste
could be read from an unrelated Wayland clipboard, and restoring it
back through _copy_to_clipboard with no x11_only wrote to that same
wrong backend, leaving the X11 CLIPBOARD stuck on the dictated text.

Threads x11_only through both helpers and every restore call site
(the immediate-failure path and the delayed _restore closure), so an
XWayland paste captures, clears, and restores the same X11 CLIPBOARD
selection it wrote to.

* fix(text-injection): annotate clipboard helpers and XWayland paste tests

Greptile P2 on #680: give `_get_clipboard_tools` a return annotation and
mark the new XWayland clipboard-paste regression tests `-> None`.

* fix(text-injection): derive XWayland paste from environment

Drop the ydotool/wl-copy second fallback on WAYLAND_XDOTOOL (wrong
clipboard, and rc=0 is not a paste) and the x11_only flag stack. Paste
picks xclip/xsel + xdotool from environment; user-facing copy stays
on the session clipboard.

* fix(text-injection): always pass host_env() to the paste chord

The AST guard only recognizes a direct host_env() call. The ternary
around it looked like we were handing the AppImage library path to
xdotool.

* test(text-injection): give XWayland injector stubs clipboard restore state

_inject_with_xdotool now pastes first, and that path reads
_clipboard_restore_target. The __new__ helper in test_text_injector_ext
never set it.

* fix(text-injection): skip clipboard restore on a stale paste failure

If a newer paste has already copied its text, the older paste's failure
handler must not write its saved clipboard back. Success restores already
honored the generation counter; the failure path did not.

* fix(text-injection): keep original clipboard across a stale paste failure

Publish the restore target as soon as copy succeeds (first writer wins)
so an overlapping paste inherits it. If the older paste then fails, the
newer restore still writes the pre-first clipboard, not intermediate
dictated text.

Benjamin EiseleandGitHub 330e1d8237 fix(actions): send real BackSpace key events for "delete that" (#714)
`_handle_delete_last` built its deletion as `"\b" * len(text)` and
passed it to `inject_text`, treating U+0008 as typed input. No backend
delivers that as a keypress:

- `ydotool type` has no keymap entry for U+0008, so it types nothing.
- IBus `commit_text()` commits it as a literal control character, which
the client inserts or drops rather than treating as a deletion.

Only an actual key event deletes, so the "delete that" voice command
did nothing on those paths while still reporting success.

Add `press_backspace(count)`, which sends `count` real BackSpace events
using the tool that fits the environment: `xdotool key --repeat` on X11
and the xdotool-backed Wayland path, `wtype -k BackSpace` or the
ydotool keycode pair `14:1 14:0` otherwise. WAYLAND_IBUS resolves a
virtual-keyboard tool of its own, since IBus cannot send key events.

`inject_text` is untouched; only the delete_last action changes.

The existing delete_last tests asserted the U+0008 string was injected,
so they now pin the new contract instead: press_backspace called once
with the character count, and inject_text not called at all.

Benjamin EiseleandGitHub 030d9486cd fix(ibus): route keyboard shortcuts to a virtual-keyboard tool (#716)
`_inject_keyboard_shortcut` dispatched X11 and WAYLAND_XDOTOOL to
xdotool and sent everything else to
`_inject_shortcut_with_wayland_tool`, putting both IBus environments on
a path that cannot serve them. IBus commits text; it has no way to
synthesise a key combination.

WAYLAND_IBUS failed worse than it looked. `wayland_tool` is only set
when dependency detection picks a Wayland injection tool, so on an IBus
session it can be unset, and the attribute access raised inside the
enclosing try. The except logs and returns False, so every shortcut
reported a clean failure rather than a missing tool.

Route X11_IBUS through xdotool, which reaches the same X server the XIM
path is already using, and give WAYLAND_IBUS a virtual-keyboard tool,
preferring wtype and falling back to ydotool. With neither present the
error names the real cause instead of surfacing an AttributeError.

X11_IBUS folds into the existing xdotool condition rather than adding a
branch, since the call is identical. The `wayland_tool` write is taken
under `_state_lock`, matching every other write to it; the injection
call stays outside the block, as the lock is not reentrant.

Text injection is unchanged; this only affects shortcut delivery, and
only in the two IBus environments.

Five tests cover the routing: X11_IBUS reaching xdotool, WAYLAND_IBUS
preferring wtype, its ydotool fallback, the no-tool-available failure
injecting nothing, and an already-chosen tool being left alone.

Benjamin EiseleandGitHub a62c5fa70d fix(wayland): drive keyboard shortcuts with wtype and ydotool (#715)
`_inject_shortcut_with_wayland_tool` could not deliver a shortcut on
either backend:

- wtype was refused outright with "Keyboard shortcuts not supported
with wtype", but wtype does chord: `-M` presses a modifier, `-k`
types a key, `-m` releases it. Modifiers must be released explicitly,
as wtype only drops them when the process exits.
- ydotool was handed the shortcut string as-is, `ydotool key ctrl+z`.
  `ydotool key` takes raw evdev keycodes ("29:1 44:1 44:0 29:0") and
documents non-interpretable values as only causing a delay, so this
was a silent no-op that still returned True.

Parse the shortcut into a list of `(modifiers, key)` steps and emit the
right form per tool. Tokens are classified by name rather than by
position, because the mappings in `ActionHandler._SHORTCUT_ACTIONS` are
not all modifiers-first: `select_line` is "Home+shift+End", meaning
press Home, then Shift+End -- two sequential steps, not one chord. Each
non-modifier token closes a step and consumes the modifiers seen since
the previous one.

An unmappable ydotool key now fails loudly instead of emitting a
partial sequence, and a trailing modifier with no key is rejected at
parse time.

The X11 and WAYLAND_XDOTOOL paths are untouched -- xdotool already
accepts the string form directly.

Verified on Hyprland 0.56.2 with wtype 0.4 and ydotool 1.0.4, injecting
into a GTK3 window that logs key-press events. `wtype -M ctrl -k z -m
ctrl` arrives as z with the control modifier set; the two-step form
arrives as Home with no modifier, then End with shift; the raw keycode
form arrives as Control_L followed by z with control. Run on its own,
`ydotool key ctrl+z` exits 0 and delivers no key event at all -- the
failure this fixes.

`test_wtype_not_supported` asserted the old refusal, so it is replaced
by tests pinning the emitted argv for both tools, the two-step case,
and the unmappable-key rejection.

Jatin K MalikandGitHub 6684f6f584 fix(inject): skip leftover IBus on KDE so dictation actually types (#753)
* fix(inject): skip leftover IBus on KDE so dictation actually types

Test Dictation and clipboard paste worked. Inject claimed success and
nothing showed up in Kate, Obsidian, terminals, or browsers.

We started ibus-daemon on X11 even when the session never opted into
IBus, then treated that daemon plus a bare xkb engine as active.
commit_text() returns True. Qt/GTK on KDE never hear it.

Do not spawn the daemon unless GTK_IM_MODULE / QT_IM_MODULE /
XMODIFIERS already name IBus. On KDE, a running daemon without those
env vars is not the session IM. Prefer a live WAYLAND_DISPLAY over a
stale XDG_SESSION_TYPE=x11, and do not take the GNOME scoped-IBus
shortcut on KDE.

See #752

* style: wrap IBus helpers so black is happy

CI lint failed on two lines in the #753 inject fix. Same behavior.

* test(inject): leftover IBus on KDE should be skipped

The CheckDependencies case still expected IBus for a leftover daemon
on KDE. That is the #752 bug. It now expects skip and wtype instead.

Benjamin EiseleandGitHub 161129cf3c feat(text-injection): use IBus on unbridged compositors when ibus-wayland runs (#614)
* feat(text-injection): use IBus on unbridged compositors when ibus-wayland runs

The `_IBUS_UNBRIDGED_COMPOSITORS` denylist assumes nothing sits between
the compositor and ibus-daemon. Since IBus 1.5.32 that is no longer a
safe assumption: IBus ships `ibus-wayland`, which implements
`zwp_input_method_v2` and relays commits to native Wayland clients
speaking text-input-v3. Every compositor on the denylist exposes
`zwp_input_method_manager_v2`, so with the bridge running they are
bridged, and skipping IBus falls back to a slower path unnecessarily.

Add a live `pgrep -x ibus-wayland` probe and let it override the
denylist. Scoped to the denylist branch only, so GNOME and the KDE
VirtualKeyboard path (#574) are untouched.

Behaviour is unchanged when the bridge is not running, and because the
check is a live probe rather than configuration it degrades back to the
denylist by itself if the bridge dies or was never started. Cost is one
pgrep per TextInjector construction, not per injection.

Verified on Hyprland 0.56.1 with IBus 1.5.34: dictation into Electron
apps (VSCodium, Electron 39/41) and kitty commits through IBus, 303
chars in ~200ms versus 16.8s for 415 chars via `ydotool type`.

Also adds VOCALINUX_FORCE_BACKEND (ibus|wtype|ydotool|auto) as discussed
in #607. Autodetection has to infer whether IBus commits actually reach
the focused app and cannot verify it -- commit_text() reports success
even when the text is dropped -- so an escape hatch is useful when the
inference is wrong, and it makes the two paths A/B-testable without
editing code. Unknown values fall back to auto with a warning rather
than silently pinning a backend. Related to #476 and #402; happy to drop
this from the PR if it should follow their design instead.

Two existing tests asserted the unbridged outcome without pinning the
probe -- one blanket-mocks subprocess.run to returncode=0, the other
shells out for real -- so both now state the "no bridge" precondition
explicitly rather than depending on the host.

Note for users: Chromium only opens a zwp_text_input_v3 seat when
launched with --enable-wayland-ime; without it the bridge runs and the
app still receives nothing.

Closes #607

* test(text-injection): cover bridge override and forced-backend branches

Codecov flagged the new branches in _check_dependencies as uncovered
(74% patch, below the 80% target).

Adds four tests to TestCheckDependencies:

- unbridged compositor + ibus-wayland running selects IBus
- VOCALINUX_FORCE_BACKEND=wtype pins wtype where IBus would be chosen
- VOCALINUX_FORCE_BACKEND=ydotool pins ydotool even with wtype present
- VOCALINUX_FORCE_BACKEND=ibus bypasses the reachability guards, with
neither a daemon nor a bridge available

Every line added by this PR is now covered.

Jatin K MalikandGitHub 3deb523efd feat(flatpak): add Flatpak packaging for universal distribution (#484)
* feat(flatpak): add Flatpak packaging for universal distribution

Adds a Flathub-ready Flatpak for the whisper.cpp engine, plus the minimal
runtime adaptations Flatpak actually needs — deliberately scoped down from the
earlier attempts (#416, #428), which bundled unrelated whisper.cpp GPU, audio,
and clipboard changes.

Packaging (packaging/flatpak/):
- app manifest, AppStream metainfo, and desktop entry (com.vocalinux.Vocalinux)
- generated offline Python dependency modules (flatpak-pip-generator)
- bundled shared modules: PortAudio, libayatana-appindicator, xdotool, xsel

Runtime changes (Flatpak-only, behaviour unchanged outside a sandbox):
- utils/paths.py: honour XDG_CONFIG_HOME/XDG_DATA_HOME so config, models and
runtime data live under ~/.var/app/<app-id> in the sandbox
- autostart uses `flatpak run <app-id>` (the host launcher is always on PATH)
- text injection and keyboard backend detect a Wayland host reached via XWayland
(no Wayland socket granted) and route through xdotool / pynput-on-X11
- tray indicator references the exported `<app-id>-*` host icon theme names

Also: a CI workflow building x86_64 + aarch64 bundles, and README / packaging
README / distro-compatibility doc updates.

Verified with a full flatpak-builder build + bundle install on aarch64:
pywhispercpp loads its native libraries without LD_LIBRARY_PATH, XDG paths
redirect correctly, bundled tools are present, and the entrypoint runs.
Manifest and builddir lint are clean and AppStream metadata validates.

Closes #167

* chore(flatpak): sync metainfo version to 0.14.0-beta

Also ignore flatpak-build-dir/ so local builder output stays untracked.

* refactor(flatpak): trim docs and comments after ponytail review

Drop redundant packaging README command blocks, shrink path/tray/autostart
comments, and stop ignoring a non-canonical build-dir name.

* fix(flatpak): close readiness gaps for v0.14.0-beta

Route log files through XDG data dirs so Flatpak keeps them under
~/.var/app, refresh AppStream screenshots to vocalinux.com, and use
the SPDX GPL-3.0-only license id.

* fix(flatpak): enable global hotkeys via evdev and --device=input

pynput over XWayland only receives keys for the focused X client. Prefer
evdev inside Flatpak and grant /dev/input so shortcuts work app-wide.

* fix(flatpak): inject text with ydotool/uinput on Wayland

xdotool only reaches XWayland clients, so typing appeared to succeed but
never hit native apps. Ship ydotool, grant --device=all for uinput, start
ydotoold on demand, and type via uinput inside the Flatpak.

* fix(flatpak): paste via wl-copy + Ctrl+V instead of typing

ydotool type injects character-by-character. Ship wl-clipboard, grant
--socket=wayland, and prefer clipboard paste for instant insertion.

* test(text-injection): expect ydotool default key-delay of 2

Matches the shipped VOCALINUX_YDOTOOL_KEY_DELAY default used when
clipboard paste falls back to character typing.

#502 only exempted KDE from the #478 real-engine gate. GNOME/Mutter has
the same scoped-activation path, so stock sessions with only an xkb:*
layout fell through to wtype, which Mutter rejects, then clipboard-only.

Allow any Wayland session without an explicit non-IBus IM to try IBus
when ibus-daemon is running; unbridged compositors still hit the
existing denylist.

* fix(ibus): preserve user engine for dead keys

Keep the VocaLinux IBus engine warm without selecting it as the active
keyboard engine. Temporarily switch to the VocaLinux engine only while
committing dictated text, then restore the user's previous IBus engine.
Wait for the IBus commit to complete before acknowledging socket
injection, so engine restoration does not race the commit.

This fixes dead-key composition (e.g. ^ + e → ê) on French AZERTY and
other layouts that rely on the active IBus/XKB engine for compose state.

Fixes #442

Supersedes #446 (rebased onto main after thread-safety hardening in #452)

* test(ibus): add coverage for scoped activation error paths

- unknown current engine (get_current_engine returns None)
- NO_ENGINE retry when previous engine could not be captured
- ConnectionRefusedError exhausting all retries
- FileNotFoundError retry-then-succeed and retry-then-fail
- Generic exception catch-all

Jatin K MalikandGitHub fa4da40e7b test(coverage): improve test coverage from 57% to 80%+ (#327)
* test(coverage): improve test coverage from 57% to 80%+

Add 30 new test files with 861 additional test cases to improve
overall test coverage from 57% to 80%+ (statement coverage).

Key modules covered:
- recognition_manager.py: 43% → 69% (audio device detection, transcription,
model download, engine initialization, buffer management)
- text_injector.py: improved coverage for X11/Wayland text injection,
environment detection, clipboard fallback, shortcut injection
- ibus_engine.py: 22% → 73% (engine lifecycle, text injection, socket server)
- evdev_backend.py: 11% → 78% (device detection, key event handling)
- pynput_backend.py: 43% → 76% (start/stop, key handling, callbacks)
- keyboard_backends/__init__.py: 54% → improved (backend creation, env detection)
- whispercpp_model_info.py: 32% → improved (GPU detection, model recommendations)
- about_dialog.py, first_run_dialog.py, main.py, single_instance.py,
  common_types.py, config_manager.py, autostart_manager.py: various improvements

All 1433 tests pass with proper test isolation to prevent mock pollution
between test modules.

* test(quality): audit and fix test quality issues

Code review audit identified and fixed the following issues:

- Remove bare try/except blocks that swallow all errors (7 tests fixed
in recognition_manager_deep, replaced with proper assertions or deleted)
- Delete source code inspection tests that read .py files as strings
instead of testing behavior (deleted test_about_dialog_coverage.py and
  test_first_run_dialog_coverage.py entirely - ~35 useless tests removed)
- Add meaningful assertions replacing weak assertIsNotNone/assertIsInstance
  checks (common_types_coverage, ibus_engine_coverage, keyboard_backends_extra)
- Fix tests that mock the system under test instead of its dependencies
(text_injector_extra now mocks subprocess.run instead of injection methods)
- Add missing assertions to tests with no verification
(ibus_engine focus_out, log window info, copy to clipboard)
- Verify download tests check requests.get was called with correct URLs
  (coverage_boost download tests)
- Fix pytest warning by renaming test_audio_input import to avoid
pytest collecting it as a test function

All 1356 tests pass with 0 failures and 0 warnings.
Statement coverage: 80.3% (3257/4054 lines covered).

* style(tests): fix black formatting and isort import ordering

Auto-format all new test files with black and isort to pass CI lint checks.

* fix(tests): resolve CI hangs and rename test files for clarity

- Fix CI hangs by properly mocking gi/GTK/IBus in all test files
- Fix sys.modules pollution in recognition manager tests by using tmp_path
- Add pytest-timeout to prevent future hangs
- Rename 28 test files to use descriptive, consistent names mapping to source modules

* fix(tests): resolve Python 3.13 CI failures

- Fix _load_stdlib_module() in test_recognition_manager_downloads.py to
handle stdlib modules that are packages (directories with __init__.py)
rather than single .py files. In Python 3.13, zipfile became a package,
causing FileNotFoundError during test collection (exit code 2).

- Fix invalid escape sequence '$' in test_cross_distro_compatibility.py
by using a raw string. Python 3.13 reports this as SyntaxWarning and
Python 3.14 will make it a SyntaxError.

* fix(tests): use direct import for zipfile instead of _load_stdlib_module

The _load_stdlib_module approach fails on Python 3.13 where zipfile is a
package (zipfile/__init__.py). Loading it via spec_from_file_location with
a custom name breaks relative imports inside the package (e.g.
'from ._path import ...' resolves to '_stdlib_zipfile._path' which doesn't
exist).

Simply import zipfile at module level before any test mocks can pollute
sys.modules — this is safe because the module-level code runs during test
collection, before any test fixtures or patches are applied.

* fix(tests): mock gi/GTK in conftest to prevent CI hangs

On CI, real PyGObject is installed and module-level imports in vocalinux
source files (ibus_engine, tray_indicator, settings_dialog, etc.) trigger
GTK initialization or IBus daemon connections that hang indefinitely in
headless environments. pytest-timeout's signal-based timeout cannot
interrupt these C-level blocking calls.

Fix by mocking gi and gi.repository in conftest.py (which runs before any
test module is collected), ensuring all test files are protected regardless
of whether they remember to mock individually.

Also add timeout-minutes: 10 to the CI test job as a safety net so that
any remaining hangs fail fast instead of running indefinitely.

* fix(tests): unconditionally mock gi in conftest for CI

The previous 'if gi not in sys.modules' guard was ineffective on CI
because PyGObject is installed via pip, so the real gi module is already
loaded. This caused GTK initialization and IBus daemon connections that
hang indefinitely in headless CI environments.

Now unconditionally replace gi and gi.repository with mocks during test
collection, regardless of whether the real package is installed.

* fix(tests): reduce timeout to 10s and use thread-based timeout

Use timeout_method=thread instead of signal (default) so that
pytest-timeout can interrupt C-level blocking calls (GTK operations,
socket accepts, subprocess waits) that the signal-based method cannot
handle. Also reduce per-test timeout from 30s to 10s since no legitimate
unit test should take longer, and hanging tests were consuming the entire
CI job timeout budget.

* fix(tests): set global socket timeout to prevent blocking on CI

Tests in test_ibus_engine.py create real Unix sockets with daemon threads
that block on socket.accept(). When tests fail or timeout, these threads
remain blocked indefinitely, preventing pytest from completing. The
thread-based timeout catches the hang but cannot terminate the blocking
accept() call.

Set socket.setdefaulttimeout(5) in conftest.py so all socket operations
(accept, connect, recv) will raise socket.timeout after 5 seconds instead
of blocking forever.

* fix(tests): add cleanup fixture for IBus socket server threads

Add autouse fixture that stops any leftover VocalinuxEngine socket server
threads after each test. Tests that trigger _start_socket_server() spawn
daemon threads blocking on socket.accept() that persist after the test
completes, eventually causing pytest-timeout to kill the process.

The cleanup fixture sets _server_running=False and closes the server
socket, which unblocks the accept() call and allows the daemon thread
to terminate.

* fix(tests): reduce socket timeout to 0.1s to avoid slowing tests

The 5-second socket timeout caused socket operations in daemon threads
to block for 5 seconds per iteration before timing out, significantly
slowing the test suite on CI. Reduce to 0.1s so blocking socket calls
fail fast without noticeably impacting test execution time.

* fix(tests): use 2s socket timeout and increase CI timeout to 15min

The 0.1s socket timeout was too aggressive and caused legitimate test
socket operations to fail. Use 2s which is long enough for test sockets
to work but short enough to unblock daemon threads.

Increase CI job timeout to 15 minutes to accommodate the socket timeout
overhead from daemon threads that retry every 2 seconds.

* fix(tests): block known-blocking daemon threads to prevent CI hangs

Instead of using socket timeouts (which either break tests or are too
slow), prevent specific known-blocking daemon threads from starting:
- ibus_engine.server_thread: blocks on socket.accept()
- evdev_backend._monitor_devices: blocks on select.select()

These threads are identified by their target function name and skipped
during Thread.start(). The thread is marked as started/stopped so
join() calls in cleanup code don't raise RuntimeError.

Test-created daemon threads (e.g. mock socket servers) are unaffected
since they use different target function names.

* fix(tests): patch Thread.join for Python 3.13 compatibility

Python 3.13 changed threading internals — join() now uses _handle.join()
which raises 'thread not started' for threads that were never actually
started. Instead of trying to fake internal state, patch join() to be a
no-op for threads that were skipped by our _safe_thread_start guard.

This fixes the 2 remaining test_evdev_backend_ext failures on Python 3.13.
